The Dark Web Vs. Deep Web
There are many concepts thrown around about the deep web and dark web. Most notably, they are places where malicious hackers roam. Well, that is incorrect. First of all, the dark web and the deep web are not the same thing. Even so, they can overlap significantly.
In comparison, the dark web is pretty small compared to the deep web. So then, the deep web is huge. In 2001, it got estimated to be 400-550 times bigger than the surface web. Since then, it continues growing.
What is the Deep Web?
The deep web is all pages that do not get indexed by most search engines. As a result, their crawlers do not 'see' these pages. Hence, they are de facto invincible to these search engines. So, to access one of these pages, you need to know their exact address. Also, you can click on another link when you get to the deep side of the web.
The deep web includes significant parts of the legitimate mainstream web. For example, Amazon pages and Netflix. This is because they get personalized for users, and not all URLs are meant to get indexed. In addition, most people are unaware that the deep web contains benign sites. For example, your password-protected email account.
What is the Dark Web?
This is a collection of internet sites only accessible by a specialized web browser. The reason being, the browser keeps darknet users' internet activity anonymous. For instance, Tor bounces your traffic via random nodes and wrapping it in encryption every time. Therefore, tracking becomes difficult.
For that reason, illegal activity is common in the darknet. As an example, users trade pornography, weapons, drugs, breached data, and a lot more. In 2013, the FBI shut down a notorious online black market called Silk Road. Likewise, other marketplaces have also gotten shut down by authorities.
Still, other dark markets are up and running.
Now, the dark web is not entirely dark. It also gets used by activists, whistle-blowers, and journalists. The reason being, they can't risk political retaliation if discovered by their government. Above all, the website WikiLeaks is on the dark web.
What Exactly is on the Dark Web?
Marketplaces for a variety of drugs. From mild recreational ones to borderline legal ones like weed to the hard stuff.
Marketplaces or various unregistered weapons and ammunition.
Lists of other dark web and deep web websites and their links.
A few rare books that got scanned.
Many blueprints for 3D printing stuff. They may be of legal or illegal things.
Some building plans to offer undetected access via secret tunnels.
Marketplaces for hiring assassins.
Recipes on how to prepare human meat accompanied by video footage.
Websites with videos depicting abuse towards children, war prisoners, and animals.
From the list, you can understand why people call the darknet a place where humanity's darkest side surfaces. Regarding transactions, darknet users use cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.
Indeed, the deep web is ethically neutral since it can get used for good or bad. In contrast, the dark web's most parts are moral-lacking. Further, not all deep web is the dark web. But all dark web is part of the deep web.
