Man Arrested in Southern France for Driving with Fake Driver’s License Purchased from Darknet

The Cazérien motorist intercepted at Golfech, in Tarn-et-Garonne, faces a fine of €45,000 and a driving ban for up to 5 years.

After having had his driving license canceled, a 39-year-old trader living in Cazères (Haute-Garonne) went to the next level of road crime by going to the Darknet, the place of Internet where total anonymity is the rule, to buy a fake license.

This motorist drew the attention of the gendarmes of the department of road safety squadron of Tarn-et-Garonne, because he was driving, this Monday afternoon, on the D 813, in Golfech, without having his seatbelt on.

Intercepted at the side of the road at around 4.30 p.m, the individual gave the military a Polish driver’s license. The document did not fail to intrigue one of the two officers who had been trained in the fight against false documents.

Checking the driver’s name against law enforcement records confirms the deception. The merchant’s French driver’s license has been canceled and the one presented, yet also issued in his name, is a fake.

Under these conditions, the rest of the investigation will take place on the premises of the traffic police. The man eventually admit that he bought this Polish license on the Darknet. According to his testimony, he spent the equivalent of €300 in cryptocurrency to obtain it.

For all these facts, the trader faces maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment, a €45,000 fine, immobilization of his vehicle, a driving ban for up to 5 years.
