The online training course on dark web and virtual currencies conducted by OSCE lasted for five days.

Main beneficiaries of the program were criminal justice practitioners from the five Central Asian OSCE participating states. It officially came to an end on 29 October 2021. The course not only provided the practitioners with basic theoretical knowledge. It also helped them in gaining practical skills. These can particularly help in the investigation of crimes facilitated by the use of the Dark Web and virtual currencies.

The course mainly depended on training materials developed by the European Cybercrime Training and Education Group (ECTEG). It covered topics such as cryptocurrency seizing, Blockchain analysis, obfuscation techniques, anonymous communication services, and searching the Dark Web. Additionally, it included a session on human rights compliance in the investigation and prosecution of cybercrime cases. However, these mainly surrounded the course topics.

As part of the practical aspect, however, the participants used GraphSense. This is an open-source tool for analyzing major cryptocurrencies. Examples of such cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Zcash and Ethereum. Developed by the Austrian Institute of Technology ,this tool is currently supported by the Austrian Security Research Programme’s CRYPTOMONITOR project. The project is led by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). It has helped in several scientific studies to evaluate cryptocurrency data.

Remember, OSCE offered the training course  as part of it's Capacity-Building project on Combating Cybercrime in Central Asia. They offered the training in close co-operation with OSCE field operations in the region. The aim of the project is to build sustainable national training capacities for police officers and prosecutors on combating cybercrime.

The project is also aimed at delivering a second train-the-trainer course. Plus, they'll deliver well thematic training courses on open-source intelligence gathering with a focus on countering terrorism and digital forensics.
