Therefore, when you log in to a service, you use your phone to verify your identity. You can do this by either clicking on a texted link or typing a number sent by an authenticator app.
Also, you can opt for a security key if you want to keep your device safe without depending on software. For this purpose, the USB or NFC-based hardware plugs into your device to authenticate. Since security keys can’t get duplicated, it makes it harder for hackers to intercept.

What are Authenticator Apps?

Authenticator apps are safer than texting. Moreover, they offer flexibility when traveling to a place without cellular service. Some popular options include the following:

The apps mostly follow a similar procedure when you are adding a new account. You scan a QR code associated with your account, and then it is saved in the app. So then, the next time you log in to your app, it will ask for a numerical code. To get past security, open the authenticator app to find the randomly generated code.
Two-factor authentication via text or an authenticator app does not protect you from potential hackers completely. However, it is a crucial step in preventing your account from getting accessed by unauthorized users. Now, here is how to enable 2FA on your accounts.

How To Enable Two-Factor Authentication Across the Web


Amazon added two-factor authentication support in late 2015. It is essential to turn on the authentication as Amazon has its fingers in many pies. For example, Comixology, Audible.com, and sites that use Amazon for payments. They are all tied to your credit card.
First, open up Amazon.com on your desktop. Then click the “Accounts and lists” drop-down menu to go to your account. After that, click on “login and security”. On the following page, click “edit” next to “two-step verification” settings. The preferred technique is an authentication app.
The backup method is phone number(s). What’s good with Amazon is telling the service to skip the codes on select devices. For instance, a PC to which you alone have access. The option might not work. If not, go back to the advanced security page and click Require codes on all devices.

Google 2FA

To turn on 2FA across Google accounts, head to the main 2FA landing page and click ”Get Started.” You will be requested to log in and then select your mobile device from a list. But if you have an iPhone, you have to download a separate app. Now, if Google sends a message to that phone, you will be asked to enter a phone number.
You can then choose if you want to receive verification codes by phone call or text message. Again, Google will apply your preferred method.
Next, Google will first send prompts to your mobile phone. They will allow you to select “yes” or “no” when a login attempt takes place. Besides, it will send a text message or phone call if that doesn’t work. For offline access, you can generate backup codes.
Google generates ten codes at a time that are designed for single-use. So, once you use one code, cross it out as it will no longer work.

Enable Two-factor Authentication on Instagram

In 2017 Instagram added 2FA to its mobile app. Even so, you can also activate it through the web. To activate two-factor authentication, tap on your profile. Next, select the hamburger menu in the upper-right corner. After that, look for “Settings” then “security,” where you will find a menu item for “Two-Factor Authentication.”
Here, you have a choice of text message-based verification or a code sent to your authenticator app.
To turn on two-factor authentication using the web, first, log in to Instagram. Then, click on your profile icon in the upper-right corner. And then, select “Settings” from the visible drop-down menu. Clicking that will open a settings menu. Here you can find the same “Privacy and Security” section as on the app.
From there, you can turn on two-factor authentication as in the app. Remember to choose your verification method.


To enable 2FA on Microsoft, log in to your account and find the “Security settings” menu. Once there, look for the “Two-step verification” section and click on the setup link available. You will get directed on how to use the Microsoft Authenticator app or a different authentication app. Furthermore, you will be able to create passwords for apps that don’t accept 2FA.


Launch WhatsApp and find the “Settings” menu under the upper-right dots icon. Look under “Account,” then select “Two-step verification,” then click on “Enable.” After that, the app will ask you to enter a six-digit PIN to use as verification. You can add an email address in case you forget your PIN.
Having an email associated with your WhatsApp account is essential. In fact, the service won’t let you verify yourself if you haven’t been active in the last seven days. Also, you have forgotten your PIN. So, it is helpful to enter an email so you can log yourself in or disable 2FA.
